דרמה של ממש התרחשה בליל ההוצאה להורג של כריסטה פייק (50), שהייתה אמורה להיות האישה הראשונה שמוצאת להורג בטנסי מזה למעלה מ-200 שנה, והאישה ה-19 בתולדות ארצות הברית כולה.
למרות ששתי מנות רעל הוזרקו לגופה במהלך הלילה, הרשויות פשוט לא הצליחו להשלים את התהליך. פייק נותרה בחיים ואפילו בהכרה חלקית יותר מ-40 דקות לאחר קבלת המנה האחרונה. מומחים בתחום כבר מיהרו להגדיר את האירוע כ"כישלון חסר תקדים".

סיפורה של פייק עורר סערה תקשורתית עולמית עוד בשנות ה-90. היא הייתה רק בת 18 כאשר רצחה באכזריות (לאחר עינויים קשים יחד עם בן זוגה) את חברתה לספסל הלימודים, קולין סלמר, בשנת 1995. המניע, לפי התביעה, היה חשדה של פייק שסלמר חושקת בבן זוגה.

I still find personally though, that for violent physical murders, the charged should not be given the choice of how to be executed.

Christa Pike has done terrible things while in prison! Why all of a sudden she still gets to challenge the death penalty now. She better get down on her knees and ask God and not Buddha to come into her life!!!!!!
Let’s not forget she tried to strangle another woman. She doesn’t deserve to be treated anything else but the murderer she is.

Get that death sentence over and done with. She was very much sane when she carried out that crime. Coleen family needs closure,it's been too long.
