Just before the sun sets, just before we all don the white kittel and stand for the Great Judgment, the real test arrives. No, it is not the fasting, and it is not the hunger gnawing at your stomach. The Chassidic influencer Rabbi Elimelech Biderman holds up a mirror to all of us: the hardest test of Yom Kippur takes place precisely in the final minutes before entering the synagogue.

Are you truly ready for the judgment?

We run, we rush, we try to get everything done. The house is upside down, the children are screaming, the pressure is at its peak. And it is right there, amidst this chaos, that the greatest trap is hidden. Biderman reminds us that just when we are closest to holiness, the Yetzer Hara (evil inclination) works overtime to make us stumble where it hurts the most: in anger, in impatience, and in disrespect toward those around us.

The opportunity you are missing

How many times have you yelled at your children just before heading off to pray for your life? How many times have you criticized your spouse because everything wasn't perfect? This is exactly the test. We approach the Day of Judgment with a heart full of resentment, with a mouth that just a moment ago spewed harsh words, and we expect the heavens to open. Does that make sense? Is that not hypocrisy?

The test that determines the fate of the year

Biderman's message is sharp and clear: Do not let this day slip through your fingers because of trifles. The final test is your true trial. If you can manage to maintain peace, Ahavat Yisrael (love of fellow Jews), and restraint just when everything is burning—perhaps, just perhaps, you will arrive at Yom Kippur as you should. It is time to stop playing games and start taking responsibility for our actions.

Do you really want to change?

The question is not what you will eat at the pre-fast meal, but what you will do with your heart in the final moments of the year. Will you choose to continue on the old, toxic path, or will you stop, take a breath, and realize that true victory is not in the prayer book, but in your treatment of the person beside you? Think about it very carefully before you open your mouth.
